My father was a model airplane enthusiastic at the time! Only, while this group of competitors where ready to launch, he was standing naked in the snow Watching his father being send to death! He was 14 at the time. As a big fan of your blog I don’t think Nazi pictures add any value or honor to your page.
I'm sure not everyone who built models during the Reich years was involved in Genocide. Likewise, I have a colleague who flew rubber and glow freeflights as a youth and it was sponsored by the Israeli Air Force. No connection to any conflicts there.
Millions have been murdered by ugly regimes all over the world and yet people go bizerk when they see a swastika http://www.modelairplanenews.com/blog/2011/06/21/scale-planes-correct-insignia/
Just because a gov't allows or permits the frivolous, doesn't mean it can't be wicked. The USA comes to mind.
If someone wants to loom at evil regimes then look to the communists first and foremost; over a 100 million dead and still counting as they continue their killing sprees in China, N Korea, Venzuela, Cuba, Vietnam, etc. The drive by media has conditioned the masses as if the Nazis were the worst. They were horrific but the commies beat them hands down. BTW, my father was imprisoned at Dachau but escaped to live.
A totally incongruous picture. Grown men working for a dictator flying rubber band aeroplanes. It's as goofy as a photo of nuns having a snowball fight. Lighten up
Dear Mr. Wolfe, (no relation) Conflict ?!!! You mean the Jews where genocide due to a conflict? That part of history I didn’t read! Sorry for that. Nazism is not about killing nor genocide, no sir, it's an ideology, It about considering human not as one! Only when you reach this level you can make thermal insulation for Nazi submarine from your victim's hair. Only then you can make soap out of their flash and of course get gold out of their teeth . So yes, I do go bizerk when I see swastika it reminds me the more then million Germans, murdered for being cripple or suspected as homo sexual, It reminds me the tow millions German women how where raped or killed by Russian soldiers revenging the Nazi regime at the last days of the Reich, Shell I refresh your mind about the fate of American pilot murder systematically after being shot down on German territory or the 1000 polish officers how where the first to be put to the gas chambers as a proof of concept? And no sir I don’t think Israeli air force is close in any way to Nazi Idea even if it is Sponsoring aviation enthusiastic
My GAWD! Who today still speaks about being racially superior? Who calls real semites spawn of bastard seed?? Whose army goes around shooting others in the head to steal their organs but prohibits the use of their organs outside their race?
I grew up in Brooklyn and can tell you that the Lebavitchers are some of the most condescending hateful people you'll meets
I commend you for your boldness in mentioning the 2 Million German AFTER the war. Here in the States (where are you?) one can lose a tenured position for even bringing it up as in the book Eye for an Eye.
WHEW!!! Yes there was a horrible War! Yes millions were killed! Yes there will probably be desperate feelings as a result! BUT guys, this is a modeling blog and a darned good one -- can't you just understand the posting was because the people were modelers, and flying their machines and DROP the fact they had to wear special shirts and insignia of the period! Let it go and just enjoy the sport please!!
I interpreted Thomas's point to be a poke in the eye at collectivism, socialism and "State Sponsored" anything. The point of the photo is not to lift up these National Socialists, but rather to point out how evil can hijack a beautiful activity like aero-modeling perhaps trying to hijack from it a sense of credibility. Evil often trades on our love of children and pastimes to try and establish an unearned moral high ground. Reading from that photo any malice or support of Nazi's by Thomas would be about the furthest thing I can ever imagine of my friend.
Joseph Wolf, I think your fathers story would be very interesting. I wonder if you have any early modeling photo's? How did he ever recover his life and his hobby after the war?
Gentlemen This blog is about model airplanes and probably one of the best! Nazi sign are about Nazis. Still – and just like in the link Mr. Ralph E. Wolfe (no relation) Attached (below) http://www.modelairplanenews.com/blog/2011/06/21/scale-planes-correct-insignia/ I don’t think symbols should be ignored. A ME Bf 109 scale model airplane with a swastika on its tale, shows a model with a sign! The picture on Tom’s blog, show a swastika with some Nazis – the model is hardly to be seen!!! I’m sure Tom meant only good when he put the picture, but like I wrote before, to my opinion, it doesn’t add much value. as a son of victim of Nazis ideology I can’t be apathetic to it.
Dave, I do not think that Tom support any Nazi idea regardless of the pictures he choose to put on his page. My father and his uncle where the only relative of the wolf family to survive the concentration camp, All his properties including pictures, where vanished. After the war he never got back to be an active modeler. When I was 5 years old, (40 years ago) he brought me a present,a cox mustang cl model, and caught me up with the bug. Three years ago at the age of 84 (after long convincing) he started to build a Dynaflight giant scale Super decathlon , he passed away two month later not before completing the rudder and elevator. I hope to complete the rest of the model someday. To all who put their comment hear, I think its grate you don’t stay apathetic, whether I like your opinion or not. Happy flying and safe landing wish you all well.
